Mombasa Safari – 4 Days of Wildlife, Landscapes & Culture
Escape the tropical bliss of Kenya’s coastline and dive into the wild heart of the country with this thrilling 4-day safari from Mombasa or Diani Beach. The journey blends the raw beauty of Tsavo East, the legendary wildlife scenes of Amboseli, and the breathtaking elevation of Taita Hills, all topped with cultural depth and immersive game drives. Let Africa Terrain Safaris take you on an unforgettable adventure from coast to savannah.
Day 1: Mombasa/Diani – Tsavo East National Park
Your safari begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your North or South Coast beach hotel or Moi International Airport. As you drive out of the palm-fringed beaches, the landscape transforms dramatically. The journey leads you along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway into Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya’s oldest and largest parks, covering over 13,000 square kilometers.
Tsavo East is renowned for its red-dust elephants—so called because they often bathe in the region’s rust-colored soil—and for the historic “Man-Eaters of Tsavo”, a pair of lions that famously terrorized railway workers in the 1890s. On your game drive to the lodge, keep an eye out for these elephants, as well as buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and possibly big cats lurking among the acacia trees.
After a hearty lunch at the scenic Ashnil Aruba Lodge, nestled near the Aruba Dam, you’ll set off on an afternoon game drive until sunset. The area around the dam is a wildlife hotspot, attracting predators and prey alike. As the sun dips below the horizon, return to your lodge for dinner and an evening under the stars.
Day 2: Tsavo East – Amboseli National Park
After an early breakfast, your journey continues northwest to Amboseli National Park, famous for its dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak. While the drive takes you through Kenya’s scenic heartland, the anticipation builds for what awaits you at the foot of this iconic mountain.
Amboseli is a paradise for photographers, offering the chance to capture elephants in the foreground of snow-capped Kilimanjaro—arguably one of the most iconic images of African safaris. The park’s ecosystem is a mix of open plains, swamps fed by underground rivers from the mountain, and acacia woodland, which together support rich biodiversity.
You’ll arrive in time for lunch at Amboseli Sentrim Camp, with time to relax before heading out for an afternoon game drive. Watch large herds of elephants stroll gracefully through the savannah, spot lions resting under trees, or catch cheetahs scanning the horizon. As dusk approaches, return to your lodge for a warm dinner and rest amid nature’s quiet.
Day 3: Amboseli – Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary
Start your day with a sunrise game drive, when predators are most active and the golden light enhances the beauty of the land. After breakfast, you’ll head east toward Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a private conservancy nestled at the edge of Tsavo West.
Taita Hills is often described as a hidden gem. Unlike the vast open plains of the earlier parks, this sanctuary is more mountainous and green, offering a different perspective on Kenya’s ecosystems. The area’s dramatic terrain and thick vegetation support a wide range of animals, and its waterholes draw wildlife throughout the day.
Your accommodation for the night is the iconic Sarova Salt Lick Lodge, uniquely built on stilts above a watering hole. It’s one of Kenya’s most photographed safari lodges and allows you to watch elephants and other animals right from your room or dining area. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive through the sanctuary or opt for a night game drive to witness the bush come alive after dark.
Day 4: Taita Hills – Coast or Airport Drop-Off
After breakfast, set out on a leisurely morning game drive. Before heading back to the coast, visit the World War I and II Museum located at Taita Hills Safari Lodge. This small but impactful museum honors the soldiers who fought in the East African Campaign—a unique and often overlooked chapter in world history. The area around Taita Hills saw real battles between British and German forces, and today it offers a blend of history and nature.
Following lunch at the lodge, begin your journey back to your beach hotel or to Moi International Airport, bringing your safari adventure to a close. You’ll return with incredible memories—of elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro, lions lazing in the Tsavo heat, and the sound of wildlife echoing through the Taita hills.
